Bergen County Special Services Comments (-1) District News Bergen County Teacher Recognition Program/Educational Professionals Luncheon Educators from the Bergen County Technical Schools and Special Services School District were among the many educational professionals honored recently at the Bergen County Teacher Recognition Program/Educational Professionals Luncheon. Pictured with Superintendent Dr. Howard Lerner are, from left, Brian Respass (BCA), Tonilynn DeMarco (ATHS @ BCC), Anne Marie Verdiramo (BCTS/Paramus), Dana Zweben (BCTS/Paramus), Susan Condro (BCSS Evergreen Program), Gwendolyn Lotter (BCTS/Teterboro), Dana Malone (BCTS/Teterboro),Sheralyn Rohllf (Secondary Hearing Impaired Program/Midland Park) Comments (-1) Teacher/Educational Services Professionals Recognition Program Honorees We congratulate Megann Bassillo, Teacher at Washington Elementary; Dr. Theresa Kelly, Physical Therapist with Educational Enterprises; and Sue Shafer, Teacher at Bleshman, who were recently honored for their efforts on behalf of students by the Bergen County Teacher/Educational Services Professionals Recognition Program. The Teacher Recognition Program was developed in 1985 to acknowledge classroom teachers who exhibit exceptional performance, and broadened in 2004 following the enactment of the Annual Educational Services Professionals Recognition Act. The goal of this program is to recognize outstanding teachers and educational services professionals at the local and county levels. An outstanding teacher is “one who uses effective and innovative instructional techniques, establishes a positive classroom climate, utilizes educational technology in an effective manner, and fosters feelings of self-worth and love of learning in students.” An outstanding educational services professional is “one who functions as a frontline advocate for the student between home and school, fosters an appropriate environment for learning, supports classroom instruction by addressing the needs of all students, and demonstrates professionalism while retaining respect, humor, compassion, and concern for the whole child.” Comments (-1) BCSS Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights - Self Assessment Grade for 2017-18 Comments (-1) more BCSS Spotlight Career Crossroads (Click Here for Video) Career Crossroads is a shared time vocational program, offering students the opportunity to explore and prepare for careers in Sales and Customer Service, or Hospitality and Food Service. Students engage in classroom, project-based and community-based learning experiences. A focus of Career Crossroads is preparing students to acquire independence and the “soft skills” required for workplace success: communication, enthusiasm and attitude, teamwork, networking, problem-solving, critical thinking, and professionalism. Students in the morning program are ages 18-21. Students attending the afternoon program are in grades 11 and 12 and attend their local high school in the morning. Children and their families from birth to twenty-one are provided services throughout the continuum and students are educated through a listening and spoken language or a total communication approach. See how the Bergen County Specoal Services Brownstone School is transforming the futures of students one child at a time. The Springboard Program is one of the most unique programs in the Bergen County Special Services School District in that it is located in a house rather than a school building. Comments (-1) Transition Center @ Wood-Ridge (CLICK HERE FOR VIDEO) The Transition Center at Wood-Ridge educates students, grades 5 through the age of twenty-one, with special needs who demonstrate cognitive delays. Instruction focuses on developing each student's independent living skills to their full potential. The Transition Center provides a full day school- and community-based learning environment, which includes Individual Education Program (IEP)-driven instruction focusing on the mastery of functional academic skills required for daily living and working in the community.
